Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ)

WHAT IS BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU (BJJ)? 

BJJ is founded on the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themselves against a bigger, stronger, heavier opponent by using technique, leverage, and most notably, taking the fight to the ground, and then applying joint locks and chokeholds to defeat the opponent. BJJ training can be used for sport grappling tournaments and in self-defense situations. Sparring (commonly referred to as "rolling" within the BJJ community) and live drilling play a major role in training and the practitioner's development. BJJ is considered a martial art, a sport, a method for promoting physical fitness and building character, and a way of life.

 

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

BJJ students can expect to improve their overall conditioning - strength, cardio, flexibility and mobility.  Students quickly form camaraderie through the challenging, yet fun training environment.  The technical skills developed with grappling have proven to be very effective in combat sports and are an awesome tool for self-defense, too!

Meet Cody Daniels, our BJJ Instructor

Cody Daniels, a Brown belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu under Diego Ramos of SAS Team, began training BJJ in 2012 to try out an interesting activity and get into shape.  He was fortunate to have American Top Team blackbelt and former Bellator pro fighter Matt Lee teaching him for his first year and a half of training in Ithaca.  At this time Professor Lee moved away and soon after Professor Diego Ramos started making the trip from Syracuse to teach BJJ classes in Ithaca.   

Cody was able to train in both Ithaca and Syracuse for a few years and in the process becoming much more comfortable with the idea of entering an organized competition.  This led to participating in his first tournament as a blue belt and competing multiple times every year since 2014. 

Since receiving his purple belt Cody has been working with BJJ students at Professor Ramos' request and urging.  Initially assisting with kids classes but eventually moving on to teaching at multiple locations in Ithaca and Syracuse.

Learn how to “press reset” on your movement operating system and regain the natural, reflexive strength and mobility of a child the same way you developed it in the first place — through a progressive series of simple exercises based on the human neurodevelopmental sequence. 

And once you’ve reclaimed your original strength, you can continue progressing the OS movements as far as you want to build astonishing levels of strength, athleticism, and resiliency.

Steve Ponton is the owner of Ithaca Kettlebells, which blends kettlebells, Original Strength, and functional movement training into a holistic approach to total fitness. Steve is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, an ACE-Certified personal trainer, and has advanced coaching certifications with Original Strength, the Functional Movement Screen, and Precision Nutrition.
